Subtitles aren't only a vital aid to making our programmes accessible to all, they're also a really useful tool for people learning a language or improving their skills.
If you watch our programmes on normal terrestrial TV or on iPlayer you can turn on English subtitles. But if you watch through the S4C Clic Player you have the added option of Welsh subtitles as well on nearly all our programmes, which opens up all sorts of possibilities.
It is completely normal to not understand every word that is said when you start watching without subtitles – for a while you will be playing a detective game of working out what's being said from the few clues that you have picked up. But the sooner you can embrace this slightly uncomfortable feeling, the quicker your understanding of spoken Welsh will improve. Give it a few weeks, then go back to watch the first programme you tried without subtitles, and you'll be amazed how much you can understand!
The Welsh language subtitling service is aimed at Welsh learners as well as Welsh speaking people who are d/Deaf, learners and those who lack confidence in speaking Welsh, to enjoy the programmes on S4C.
The subtitles are suitable for non-Welsh speakers, mixed language homes and to those who are d/Deaf.
An audio description service is provided for the blind and partially blind through the medium of Welsh. This service contains additional descriptions to enhance the viewers' enjoyment.
If you're watching S4C Clic on your computer, you can use keyboard shortcuts to toggle between the different types of subtitles, as well as jumping backwards or forwards and pausing the video.
