'Pantyfedwen' comes top

12 March 2007

Viewers of the S4C spiritual series Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol have chosen the hymn ‘Pantyfedwen’ as the 2007 Hymn for Wales.

In a special edition of the series on Sunday (11 March), the popular hymn, with the words of the late Rev W Rhys Nicholas, ‘Tydi a wnaeth y wyrth, O Grist, Fab Duw’ and Eddie Evans’ melody, came top out of a short-list of twelve.

In the programme, presented by Alwyn Humprheys from Port Talbot’s Afan Lido, a top ten of the shortlisted hymns was performed.

Lewis Valentine’s great hymn, ‘Dros Gymru’n Gwlad’ came second and John Hughes’ ‘Arglwydd, gad im dawel orffwys’, to the melody ‘Arwelfa’ came third.

John Hughes’ nephew, the renowned conductor Owain Arwel Hughes led the audience, to Jeffrey Howard’s musical arrangements and the accompaniment of the Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol orchestra.
