  Farmer's wife from Carmarthenshire wins S4C Welsh cake challenge

A farmer's wife from Meidrim in Carmarthenshire has won the S4C Welsh Cake Challenge organised by the Channel’s rural affairs series, Ffermio

TV series producers, Teledu Telesgop, launched a St David’s week competition for Ffermio viewers and www.ffermio.tv web surfers, challenging people to send their Welsh cakes to the company’s Swansea headquarters.

A panel of experts from the TV series have tasted hundreds of Welsh cakes over the last two weeks, but it was Patsy Lewis from Corngafr farm, Meidrim who came out top.

Patsy will now receive a bakestone especially for making Welsh cakes, produced by the Welsh Griddle Company in Swansea.

“There was a tremendous response to the competition and the standard was very high. We are very glad to see that the tradition of making Welsh cakes in Wales is very much alive and sizzling. The panel felt that Patsy's Welsh cakes excelled in both taste and texture,” says Terwyn Davies, Ffermio’s director of interactive services.

Patsy Lewis, who is semi retired but still presently living on the farm with husband John, was over the moon at hearing that she'd won.

“People seem to enjoy my Welsh cakes, but it was nevertheless a shock to win,” says the 56-year-old mother of three. "I really enjoy making Welsh cakes on my Rayburn at home and it is handy having a bakestone to make Welsh cakes when people call or when something is on in the chapel.

“I haven't got a secret recipe, but I always use Welsh butter, Menyn Caron if possible, eggs from my daughter's hens and put plenty of sugar on them. You have to have a nice cup of tea to go with them too!”

Patsy adds, “Perhaps the new griddle will come in handy when our bungalow is finished and we move to the village or maybe one of my daughters will want it as they enjoy cooking too.”
