Programmes of all nature nominated at 2009 Celtic Media Festival

12 January 2009

A definitive series about Welsh wildlife is among 13 S4C programmes nominated for awards at the 2009 Celtic Media Festival, held in Caernarfon, Gwynedd in March.

The six-part series Natur Cymru, produced by Aden film company and presented by naturalist Iolo Williams, was one of the Channel’s flagship programmes during its 2008 year of green-themed programming.

Spoof chat show Sioe PC Leslie Wynne, produced by Boomerang and fronted by comedian Tudur Owen in the guise of a fictional North Walian policeman, is also up for an award in the Entertainment category.

Lle aeth Pawb? is one of three programmes produced by Gwynedd-based Cwmni Da featured in the nominations list. The series has been praised for its originality in reuniting people featured in old photographs, and receives a nomination in the Factual Entertainment category.

The S4C drama about a family of gangsters from West Wales, Y Pris is on the awards trail again after winning the Best Sound Track prize at the 2008 BAFTA Cymru ceremony. Producers Fiction Factory are hoping for more success in the Drama category this March.

Among the other programmes nominated is the award-winning film Dringo i’r Eitha about the hugely talented young Bethesda climber, Ioan Doyle. Produced by Cwmni Da, it was first shown on S4C as part of the channel’s Wynebau Newydd (New Faces) series and last year won the ‘Camera Alpine Gold’ Award at the Graz mountain film festival in Austria.

The programme is up against another S4C documentary in the Factual Single category: Jennie, a film produced by Cambrensis Communications about the controversial Welsh magazine editor, Jennie Eirian Davies.

S4C’s current affairs flagship Y Byd ar Bedwar, produced by ITV Cymru, does well with two nominations in the Current Affairs category, while productions by BBC Cymru Wales, Teledu Apollo and Rondo Media have also been nominated.

S4C’s Communications Directorate is also up for an award for its talked-about Six Nations promotional campaign, produced for S4C by JM Creative. It beat campaigns promoting the Olympics and Euro 2008 to win a Gold award at the Promax UK Conference and Awards last November.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning, said: “We’re delighted that so many of our productions are up for awards at this year’s Celtic Media Festival. It has been a very exciting year of programming on the Channel and this is recognised in the wide range of programmes nominated. I congratulate all the talented teams involved in making these programmes, in the independent sector, BBC Wales and ITV Wales.”
