Wedi 7 reveals 2007 Tir na n-Og children’s books awards winners

The three winners in the three categories of this year’s Tir na n-Og Awards – the Welsh Books Council’s awards scheme for recognising authors of children’s books - will be revealed in a special edition of S4C’s weeknight magazine programme Wedi 7 on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7 at 7.15pm.
The Welsh Books Council makes the awards annually and the shortlist in each of the three catregories was announced in March. The three winners each receive a prize of £1,000.
The presenter of Wedi 7 Heledd Cynwal will announce the winners and the programme will have a portrait of each and will interview them.
The names on the shortlist in the Welsh language books – Primary Sector, are Emily Huws of Caeathro, Caernarfon for her book, ‘Babi Gwyrdd’, Mair Wynn Hughes of Pentraeth, Anglesey for ‘Ein Rhyfel Ni’ and Catherine Fisher from Newport for ‘Y Wisg Enfys’. All three are previous winners of a Tir na n-Og award.
In the Welsh language books – Secondary Sector those shortlisted are Gareth F.Williams of Porthmadog, now living in the Vale of Glamorgan, for his book ‘Adref Heb Elin’, Angharad Devonald from Cardiff for ‘Angst ac Anawsterau’ and Caryl Lewis from Aberaeron for ‘Ffêc Tan, Rissole a Tships.’ Gareth F.Williams and Caryl Lewis have both won Tir na n-Og awards previously.
In the third category for English language books, those shortlisted are Daniel Morden from Newport for ‘Dark Tales from the Wood’, Kevin Crossley-Holland, a former Tir na n-Og winner, for ‘Gatty’s Tale’ and David Clement-Davies for ‘The Telling Pool’. The conditions for this category require a story with a Welsh background.
Menna Lloyd Williams, Head of the Children’s Department at the Welsh Books Council, said, “These awards honour writers of children’s literature in Wales and the standard has once again been very high. We’re pleased to have the opportunity to recognise the authors and the publishers.”
The awards were established in 1976 and are sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, CILIP Cymru.
