S4C has live and exclusive coverage of iconic tenor José Carreras’ concert from the Llangollen International Musical Festival on Sunday, 15 July.
Morgan Jones presents this milestone musical broadcast on the festival’s closing night when viewers can see the world-famous tenor from Barcelona perform in Llangollen for the first time ever.
In this concert, which can only be seen live on S4C, Carreras follows in the footsteps of the other two greats in the famous Three Tenors, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, who have both appeared in the past at the international festival.
“I’m the youngest of the three tenors so it’s natural for me to be the last one to appear here at Llangollen,” says José Carreras in a special interview for the S4C broadcast, which is being produced for the Channel by Opus TF.
“Joking aside, I’d say that I am delighted to be singing in Wales because, as you know very well, the Catalans and the Welsh are similar in many ways; we have the same constant desire to respect our national identities and our traditions. In this light, I feel we are very close and that gives me great pleasure to be able to sing here with you,” added Carreras
Carreras will also be joined on stage by the orchestra of the Welsh National Opera and the award-winning Serendipity Choir, conducted by Tim Rhys Evans. The concert also features the pianist Lorenzo Bavaj and the Andean ensemble Los Calchakis.
This live concert broadcast crowns S4C’s week-long transmission from the festival in Llangollen and what should be a memorable weekend of music on S4C.
On the concluding Saturday of the Eisteddfod (14 July), the Channel will also show live coverage of the Choir of the World competition, presented by Nia Roberts.
In the Choir of the World competition, the choirs placed first in the Mixed, Barbershop, Male, Female, and Chamber categories will go head-to-head to fight for the title of Choir of the World title and the prestigious Pavarotti Trophy chosen by the festival’s international panel of adjudicators.
