The winner of the 2008 Bryn Terfel Urdd Gobaith Cymru Scholarship is Rhian Lois Evans from Pontrhydygroes near Tregaron. The competition was held tonight at Stiwt Theatre Rhosllanerugog, where six of Wales' young talents competed for the scholarship worth £4,000.
Rhian Lois won the main prize in the Solo competition at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Conwy last May. Originally from Pontrhydgroes, Ceredigion, she is currently in her final year studying at the Royal College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. After graduating, she wishes to complete a postgraduate course in London.
Says Rhian Lois (the winner): “I feel so happy and cant believe the result. It’s been a brilliant night and an unforgettable experience. It’s been a very tiring two days but I’ve enjoyed every second and it’s all been worth it. The money will go towards post-graduate course fees specialising in classical singing which i will study in Cardiff or London.”
Aled Siôn, Urdd Gobaith Cymru Director of the Eisteddfod and the Arts says:
"We had a magnificent evening tonight at the 2008 Bryn Terfel Urdd Gobaith Cymru Scholarship. The standard of performances was exceptionally high at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhosllanerchrugog. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to Bryn Terfel for his continuous interest and never-ending support in the work of the Eisteddfod and the Urdd. The financial prize will be of great benefit to the winner at the start of her career. I wish Rhian Lois every success in the future.”
