Two of Wales’ brightest golfing talents have received a masterclass with top professional golfer Becky Brewerton– thanks to S4C’s Golf Scholarship Fund.
Katherine O’Connor of Bloxham, Oxfordshire and Jamie Howie of Harlech, Gwynedd went a full round with Ladies’ European Tour player Becky on the internationally renowned Royal Porthcawl Golf Club links.
Katherine, 18, a member of Wales’ International Woman’s team and Jamie, 18, a member of Wales’ Home International Team, each received an S4C scholarship to help them develop their golfing careers and improve their game.
One of the highlights of the scholarship, administered on S4C’s behalf by the Golf Union of Wales, was the masterclass.
Katherine said: “Winning the S4C scholarship has helped me advance my career in a way that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. It’s helped me to buy equipment and allows me to play in bigger and better tournaments.”
Jamie said: “I’ve been really looking forward to the masterclass with Becky Brewerton as she’s one of my heroes. She’s succeeded in putting Wales on the map and playing at the highest level across the world.”
Becky Brewerton said: “I was delighted to be asked to hold this masterclass for Jamie and Katherine - they were both very good. Katherine is one of the leading ladies in Wales at the moment and I fully expect to see her on tour in the near future and Jamie’s determination to succeed and play better golf is clear to see.”
The S4C Golfing Scholarship Fund is part of the Channel’s ever-growing commitment to the sport in Wales. S4C, an official partner of the 2010 European Ryder Cup, held at the Celtic Manor Resort, recently launched a flagship TV golfing series, Golffio and also sponsors the S4C Wales Ladies’ Championship of Europe. The Channel will also broadcast highlights of the 2010 Ryder Cup, as well as an hour-long preview programme on the tournament.
Geraint Rowlands, S4C’s Content Editor, Sport said: “The masterclass is a key element of the S4C Scholarship experience. There’s no better way to learn than from those at the top of the game. We hope that the masterclass will help nurture a new generation of Welsh golfers who will be able to challenge the best in the world.”
