S4C launches 2010 Cân i Gymru songwriting competition
15 October 2009
S4C is inviting composers from across Wales and beyond to enter its 2010 Cân i Gymru songwriting competition, which offers a top prize of £10,000.
Entries by composers can be on CD, cassette or .mp3 and must be accompanied by an entry form, which is available, along with full competition details, at the Cân i Gymru website: s4c.co.uk/canigymru .
The closing date for entries is 11 December 2009 and the minimum age for entry is 16.
A panel of experts will look at each entry before drawing up a shortlist of eight songs, all of which will be performed at the live final, held at Venue Cymru, Llandudno on 28 February 2010. Presenter Sarra Elgan will host the event.
As well as the £10,000 prize and special competition trophy, the winner will be invited to represent Wales at the Pan Celtic Music Festival held in Ireland.
Former Catatonia band member Owen Powell, who is the Chairman of the Cân i Gymru jury, said, “Cân i Gymru is a unique competition which offers both budding and established composers the chance to gain wider recognition for their work.
“The live final is always a fantastic occasion – and with a top prize of £10,000 as well as the chance to represent Wales in Ireland, I’m confident the response this year will be as strong as ever.”
