Alun Evans – who performs under the name Alun Tan Lan - won S4C’s 2010 Cân i Gymru competition at Venue Cymru Llandudno on Sunday 28 February
The talented Conwy Valley singer songwriter came out top with the song 'Bws i'r Lleuad' (Bus to the Moon).
Alun, of Llanddoged near Llanrwst, was delighted to win the £10,000 prize for penning the winning song and plans to use the money to build a recording studio in his garden.
Seventeen-year-old Tomos Wyn, who lives in the same village as Alun, performed the winning song on the night.
Alun wrote the song ‘Bws i’r Lleuad’ as a demo for his new album and he thinks the catchy melody appealed to the audience.
Alun said: “I think the song’s appeal was that it's easy-going, catchy and light hearted. Tomos’ voice suits the song – he’s a great young talent. He did a great job and it was a brilliant experience for him to step into the spotlight on his own. His dad runs the local fish and chips shop and he promised me free chips for life if we won Cân i Gymru!”
Alun is a familiar face on the Welsh rock and pop scene as a former member of Euros Childs’ band and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. He is currently the guitarist for a new instrumental band Y Niwl.
Tomos, 17, a pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, adds, “I normally sing with a choir by my side, so going solo was a bit of a challenge. The buzz at Venue Cymru was amazing and the audience was great. A bus of supporters came from Llanddoged to the event so we had a lot of support on hand. I’ve had plenty of text and Facebook messages - it’s been quite surreal.”
In second place and winning £2,000 was Gai Toms with the song 'Deffra', which was performed on the night by Estynedig. Jaci Williams and Aron Elias came third winning £1,500 with the song 'Gorwel'.
