S4C launches 2011 Cân i Gymru

08 November 2010

Do you have the talent of writing a song capable of winning S4C’s annual song-writing competition, Cân i Gymru 2011 (Song for Wales)? Are you looking for the opportunity to compose and show off your talent with a place in the live grand final at stake? Will your song be crowned the winner and chosen to represent Wales at next year’s Pan Celtic Festival?

Today (Monday 8 November), S4C is inviting composers from across Wales and beyond to enter its 2010 Cân i Gymru song writing competition, which offers a place at the Pan Celtic Festival, as well as a cash prize.

The closing date for entries is 7 January 2011 and the shortlist of eight songs chosen by a panel of experts, headed by former Catatonia guitarist Owen Powell, will be performed live on S4C from the Pontrhydfendigaid Pavilion on 6 March 2011.

Owen says, “We welcome all kinds of songs and music by anyone – from bands to individuals, experienced performers or youngsters, with an orchestra backing or a single guitar. Any style of music will be considered and I must emphasise that the quality of the track on the CD or cassette isn’t important at this early stage of the competition.

“We’re looking for the seed of an idea at the initial stage – with a memorable melody and words that evoke a reaction from us. Once the jury decide on the eight finalists, there is a long production process where we’ll spend time in the studio with the artists preparing for the live final.

“The Cân i Gymru final offers a unique platform to all the artists who play a part – from well-known bands and individuals to the youngsters who are starting on their journey in music. Over the years we’ve seen a great variety of songs, styles and talents on the Cân i Gymru stage and it is proof that the competition continues to go from strength to strength."

Musician Alun Tan Lan was last year’s winner with the song ‘Bws i’r Lleuad’ (Bus to the Moon). Tomos Wyn, who has recently joined S4C’s teen drama series Rownd a Rownd, performed the winning song.

The Cân i Gymru competition is produced for S4C by Avanti. For further information on the competition, please contact Avanti on 01443 688530 or canigymru2010@thepopfactory.com.
