S4C won eight awards at the 2011 BAFTA Cymru Awards ceremony (Sunday 29 May) including Best Presenter for Angharad Mair, host of its nightly magazine programme Wedi 7, produced by Tinopolis.
Angharad Mair’s award was for a tribute edition of Wedi 7 to the historian, author and language campaigner, Hywel Teifi Edwards who died last year.
The S4C drama series Caerdydd won two awards. The series, made by Fiction Factory, about the lives of a group of young people in the Welsh capital, won Best Costume Design and Best Writer.
Another double award winner for S4C was the moving documentary, O’r Galon: Y Trên i Ravensbrück (From the Heart: The Train to Ravensbruck). Made by Rondo Media, it followed a family from Wales to Germany to find out how family members suffered there during the Second World War. It won Best Camera and Best Editing: Factual.
The S4C drama series Pen Talar, a Fiction Factory production, won Best Original Music. The documentary series made by Teledu Telesgôp, Gwanas i Gbara, in which Bethan Gwanas makes an emotional journey to Nigeria, won Best Director:Factual. The series Byw yn ôl y Llyfr, in which Bethan Gwanas and Tudur Owen live in the Victorian style, won Best Titles, created by Dinamo for production company Cwmni Da.
S4C’s Director of Commissioning, Meirion Davies, said, “We’re very pleased that so many S4C programmes have been recognised and have been successful in the BAFTA Cymru awards. It’s a testament to the standard of S4C’s programming and a tribute to the commitment and ability of the production sector in Wales. It also recognises the hard work that goes into producing programmes of the highest standard. Congratulations to all the winners who richly deserve these accolades.”
