S4C has unveiled a package of events for its 2011 Welsh Learners’ Week to be held between July 4 and July 8.
The Welsh Learners’ Week – Wythnos Dysgu Cymraeg – is being organised in the run-up to S4C’s celebrity learners’ TV series, cariad@iaith:love4language.
The series will see eight yet-to-be-revealed celebrities venturing into the eco chic campsite at Fforest, Cilgerran between 9 and 16 July for a week-long intensive course under the tuition of TV presenter and language tutor Nia Parry and top language tutor Ioan Talfryn.
A number of flagship organisations and companies, including the Welsh for Adult Centres, Tesco, a number of flagship Welsh newspapers and Acen have joined up with S4C to raise awareness and draw attention to the opportunities available for people to learn Welsh.
The week’s events will include the launch of a new Welsh Learners’ Pack and a tour of Tesco stores. S4C’s daily magazine shows, Wedi 3 and Wedi 7 will cover the week with a range of features and items.
S4C’s Chief Executive Arwel Ellis Owen said: “We are delighted that the television series has inspired organisations and companies to work together to show the great opportunities available for learning Welsh.
“A similar week was held when a previous series of Cariad@Iaith – Love4Language was broadcast several years ago and captured the imagination of the Welsh public. We hope that this Welsh Learners’ Week will generate even more interest and lead to an even greater demand for Welsh language lessons.”
Welsh language multi-media company Acen have organised a Wales-wide tour of Tesco stores where information about learning Welsh will be available in store.
The Tesco tour is in Tesco Extra Haverfordwest on Monday, 4 July, Tesco Extra Bridgend on Tuesday, 5 July, Tesco Extra Pontypridd on Wednesday, July 6, Tesco Superstore Welshpool on Thursday July 7 and Tesco Extra Wrexham on Friday, July 8.
The S4C Welsh Learners’ Pack will include a booklet and CD by Wales’ most famous language tutor Nia Parry. It is an Introduction to the Welsh Language packed with some very useful, introductory words and phrases. The Pack also includes information about Welsh language courses available throughout Wales from July onwards.
The pack – including the CD – can be downloaded free of charge from the S4C website, s4c.co.uk/love4lang or you can order a copy by phoning the S4C Viewers’ Hotline on o870 6004141.
