Early collection of S4C films to be kept in National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales

An important collection of some of S4C’s early programmes and films is to be kept for future use at the National Screen and Sound Archive at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
S4C and the National Screen and Sound Archive announced today that they had reached an agreement regarding the collection of programmes and films and associated items which are currently part of S4C’s own archive at its Cardiff headquarters, with the intention of securing the collection’s long-term future.
The collection covers a range of programme titles and film prints covering a wide spectrum and a variety of genres – from an early documentary series on S4C Mwynhau’r Pethe, to Oscar-nominated films like Hedd Wyn and Solomon a Gaenor and animated productions like Gogs and Gŵr y Gwyrthiau.
S4C Chief Executive, Arwel Ellis Owen, said, “The expertise of the Archive’s staff in handling film is vitally important in trying to assess and preserve this collection, while its location in Aberystwyth will ensure the Archive also has access to the material for research and educational purposes.”
The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales is home to a comprehensive and unequalled collection of films, television programmes, videos, sound recordings and music relating to Wales and the Welsh.
National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales Manager, Dafydd Pritchard, said, “The Archive is very glad to be working with S4C in this way to preserve these collections for the future, and eventually secure greater access to them in the future.”
