A hat-trick for composers in S4C’s carol competition!

07 December 2011

A creative song-writing team is celebrating after winning S4C’s prestigious S4C Carol Competition for the third time.

The highly respected composers Elfed Morgan Morris and Lowri Watcyn Roberts have won the 2011 S4C Carol Competition for the carol ‘Llwybrau Cofio’, taking home the £1,000 prize.

The carol will be performed for the first time in the Thousands of Christmas Voices Concert in Llangollen Pavilion on Sunday 11 December.

Highlights of the concert, organised by S4C and The Daily Post newspaper, will be broadcast on S4C on Thursday 22 December at 21:00.

Headlining the concert this year is Anglesey tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones along with soprano Mari Wyn Lewis, Crescendo show choir, young performer Cai Fôn Davies, Northop Silver Band, The Ukuleighleighs, Alun Tan Lan, Ysgol Pen Barras school and Rhos Male Voice Choir.

Elfed Morgan Morris, deputy headmaster at Ysgol Llandygai, Bangor, composed the melody and Lowri Watcyn Roberts, head of the Welsh department at Ysgol Brynrefail in Llanrug, wrote the words. The creative duo have won the competition twice before.

‘Llwybrau Cofio’ (translation: Paths of Remembrance) has quite a traditional style but with a positive and uplifting feel.

One of the competition judges Hefin Owen, of Rondo Media, the company which produces the Carolau o Langollen programme for S4C said, “The carol is very melodious and I’m sure it will become very popular. It’s a sing that stays in the memory straight away.

“S4C viewers can look forward to hearing the brand new carol for the first time as part of the Carolau o Langollen programme on 22 December.”
