Something for everyone on S4C with a new schedule which starts on St David’s Day

21 February 2012

There’s something for everyone on S4C as we announce our new-look schedule with new, innovative, fresh and exciting programmes which bring new faces to the screen.

Geraint Rowlands, S4C’s Interim Director of Commissioning says, “The first of March sees the start of a busy period of new programmes on the Channel. There will be something for everyone among the choice of documentary, entertainment, music, drama, sport and comedy programmes.

“As well as new series’, there is also a new look to our schedule and new faces bring a fresh and exciting feel to the screen.”

The biggest change is four new regular programmes with entertainment, information and a chance for you to have your say – Heno, Prynhawn Da, Pen8nos and Sam ar y Sgrin.

At 7 o clock every Monday to Thursday Heno – with Rhodri Ogwen Williams and Emma Walford or Rhodri Owen and Mari Grug presenting – is an exciting and interesting series with guests and contributors in the studio to discuss all sorts of topics.

Every Monday to Friday at 1 o clock Angharad Mair, Siân Thomas and Rhodri Ogwen Williams take their turn to present Prynhawn Da – a friendly and relaxed programme with a mixture of live items and a chance to look back at classic archive S4C programmes.

Friday will be a lot of fun as Eleri Siôn and Gethin Evans present Pen8nos. It’s a programme full of entertainment, in the studio and out in the communities, with Elin Fflur and Llinos Lee broadcasting from different locations each week.

Pen8nos is split into two parts, with half an hour of entertainment between 7 and 7:30, and then another hour at 8:25. During the second part we go to the Jacpot studio where Rhodri Ogwen Williams presents the popular quiz.

Following Pen8nos at 9:30 there’s more entertainment with programmes such as Jonathan, Sioe Tudur Owen and Dim Byd Mwy.

To end the week, and to begin a new one, the Sunday night programme Sam ar y Sgrin is a chance for you to voice your opinion about S4C programmes. Presented by Aled Samuel, interaction with the audience is vital since it is the viewers’ own programme.

March also sees the start of the new learners’ service called Hwb. It includes a weekly programme every Sunday afternoon as well as a multi platform online service. Nia Parry presents with co-presenter and keen learner Matt Johnson.

Each programme contains different features, from inside and outside the studio, including cooking, comedy and more. And in the slot ‘Sioe Siarad’ we follow Matt’s efforts to improve his Welsh skills as he interviews a familiar face on the sofa.

One change that will affect the younger viewer is changes to the Cyw and Stwnsh times. Cyw will be on every morning until 1 in the afternoon, when it will take a break for Prynhawn Da. There’s more fun with Cyw after school at 3 o clock and Awr Fawr Cyw will lead us up to Stwnsh at 5:30 in the afternoon.

On Monday to Friday, the Stwnsh crew – Anni, Tudur, Lois and Owain - will present a variety of programmes for young people, and on Friday we go live to the TAG studio with Geraint and Elin.

Clwb Cyw continues between 7 and 9 o clock every Saturday and is extended by half an hour on Sundays - 7 to 9:30. There will also be fun live from the Stwnsh Sadwrn studio every Saturday at 9.

There will be new programmes too, including Bla Bla Blewog on Cyw and Cog1nio on Stwnsh which tests young people’s skills in the kitchen.

Another change is that Sgorio will move to a 6:30 slot every Tuesday. The programme will be the same, with a look back at the weekend’s games and discuss the football stories making the headlines.

Pobol y Cwm remains a cornerstone of the schedule each weeknight at 8, and another chance to see the episode later in the evening at 10:30 – with on-screen English subtitles.

Our new schedule begins on St David’s Day and to celebrate the day there is a special programme of music and laughter with entertainer Caryl Parry Jones, Noson yng Nghwmni… Caryl. Another episode in the series, Noson yng Nghwmni… Mark Evans with the West End star will be on later in the month.

Also on St David’s Day, the crew that make comedy series Dim Byd present a programme about a ‘lost’ hero of Welsh athletics, Jac y Ddafad Wyllt. We also see how the residents of Cwmderi celebrate the day on Pobol y Cwm and the new programmes Heno and Prynhawn Da wear their leeks with pride.

The annual Cân i Gymru contest is held on Sunday 4 March. Elin Fflur and Dafydd Du present the competition live from Pafiliwn Bont, Pontrhydfendigaid with eight songs competing for the honour. More details on the website – s4c.co.uk/canigymru

Shân Cothi has taken on an incredible challenge this year and the two programmes Cheltenham Cothi will follow her every gallop. Nôl at y Gwrol Ryfelwyr is another programme about the military and re-visits soldiers of the Welsh Fusiliers who were featured in a documentary in 1996.

To coincide with the opening of the Wales Coastal Path, the new series of Bro will meet people who work and live in the communities along the path. For this series, Shân Cothi and Iolo Williams are joined by presenter Lowri Morgan.

In 2003 Lowri Morgan became one of only 80 people to ever see the Titanic shipwreck. Her interest in the ship’s history has remained with her and in April, almost 100 years since the disaster, she presents the documentary Cymry’r Titanic about the link between Welsh people and the famous ship.

Be ready to see some of Wales’ hardest people in the series Cwffio Cawell. Cage Fighters and their fans try to shake off the prejudice and attempt to show why Cage Fighting has grown in popularity. The ideal programme if you’ve had enough of the same old sports.

The series Sion a Siân (Mr and Mrs) could also see a few arguments every Saturday night as the old favourite returns with a brand new look. Stifyn Parri and Heledd Cynwal test how much couples really know about each other.

Come on a trip to Blackpool with the coaches full of Welsh holidaymakers who stay at country singers Tony and Aloma’s hotel in the documentary Tony ac Aloma – i’r Gresham. And a very different kind of music is featured in Aled Jones’ programme about classical music Aled Jones: Fy Nhaith Glasurol.
