S4C will mark St David’s Day by launching its new-look schedule on a day of celebration which will also see a packed evening of entertainment, music, drama and humour.
The launch of two daily shows, the afternoon magazine Prynhawn Da and the early evening show Heno are just two of the highlights on a packed patron saint’s day package.
At 7.oopm, the viewers will be welcomed to the new magazine show Heno (translation: Tonight) by presenters Rhodri Ogwen Williams and Emma Walford. Heno will be packed with interesting stories about the people of Wales and beyond and will feature guests in the studio who will discuss all sorts of topics.
In the first show, Rhodri will show presenter and keen historian Dewi Prysor how to prepare a traditional Welsh meal and former Miss Wales Courtenay Hamilton will talk about the honour of representing her country and of singing in the Gary Speed memorial concert.
Rhodri and Emma are two of the four-strong presenting team which will also include Rhodri Owen and Mari Grug. Heno will broadcast live from Tinopolis production company’s Llanelli studios every Monday to Thursday.
Earlier in the day at 1.00pm, the new afternoon magazine Prynhawn Da (Good Afternoon) will broadcast for the first time when Angharad Mair, Siân Thomas and Rhodri Ogwen Williams take their turn to welcome viewers to a two-hour show which will include a mixture of live items and classic S4C archive programmes.
The first show will celebrate the 65th anniversary of Llanelli’s Welsh-language primary school, Ysgol Dewi Sant and fashion expert Huw Rees gives fashion tips for people who want to wear the traditional Welsh cloth, brethyn.
Singer, actor, poet, writer and presenter - Caryl Parry Jones is one of Wales’ most talented and highly respected performers, so it is fitting that St David’s Day features a special showcase of music and laughter from the multi-talented broadcaster in the new S4C strand Noson yng Nghwmni… (A Night in the company of…) at 8.25pm.
Following Noson yng Nghwmni… the viewers will be introduced to Jac y Ddafad Wyllt, the forgotten hero of Welsh athletics – a truly unbelievable story that’s very aptly told in this Olympic year.
As part of St David’s week, S4C will also launch a new Friday night show Pen8nos. Eleri Siôn and Gethin Evans present the entertainment programme full of fun and games in the studio, and out in our communities where Elin Fflur and Llinos Lee will present from a different location each week. Also included in the programme is the popular quiz show Jacpot.
Another new series is the Sunday evening show Sam ar y Sgrin which takes a wry look on the week that’s been and the week ahead on S4C through the eyes of presenter Aled Samuel.
This week also sees the broadcast of the S4C annual song competition Cân i Gymru (Song for Wales), on Sunday 4 March, when Elin Fflur and Dafydd Du present eight songs live from Pafiliwn Bont, Pontrhydfendigaid as eight songwriters compete for the honour to represent Wales in the pan-Celtic festival.
St David’s Day will be the platform too for the new short film strand Calon (translation: Heart) just before 7.00pm when short, striking thee-minute films look at all aspects of Welsh life. It starts tonight with a film about the great Welsh rugby coach and player Clive Rowlands.
