Special showing of S4C series at international festival

21 June 2012

An S4C documentary series will be showcased at this year’s North American Festival of Wales.

Episodes of Mamwlad, the series in which author Ffion Hague explored the stories of women who have left their mark on Welsh history, will be shown during the festival’s Cinema in Wales sessions.

This year’s festival will be held at Scranton, Pennsylvania between 30 August and 2 September and over 1,000 Welsh Americans are expected to join the celebration of Welsh culture.

The six-part series Mamwlad, produced by Tinopolis, looked at the story of seven amazing women - Megan Lloyd George, Margaret and Gwendoline Davies, Kate Roberts, Lady Llanover, Cranogwen and Laura Ashley. The series also highlighted these women’s achievements by showing the obstacles they faced and the courage it took to challenge those around them.

Gerri Baker Parry, one of the festival’s organisers, said, “Each year at ‘Cinema Wales’ we try and show our delegates at least one programme about a Welsh person who has had an impact on history. We were delighted to discover that S4C had commissioned six such programmes about Welsh women for its Mamwlad series earlier this year and we are very grateful to S4C and Tinopolis for allowing us to show the programmes at our festival. We are very confident that they will be highly popular with our Welsh-American and Welsh-Canadian festival-goers.”

Among the activities during this year’s North American Festival of Wales will be a traditional Eisteddfod competition, Dafydd Iwan performing at the opening ceremony and the grand finale featuring Godre’r Garth Choir from Pontypridd.
