Following the successful launch of Britain’s most advanced weather app for the iPhone last year, S4C and Tinopolis have developed a newer version suitable for Android devices.
Android users will be able to download the bilingual app for free to enjoy the pioneering service, which is an extension of the television provision.
The app uses a unique 1km forecasting grid. This data allows users to get pinpoint forecasts for the weather where they actually are rather than an average or distant weather reporting station.
S4C’s weather app also provides fifteen day forecasts for your area or anywhere else in the world.
Mari Grug, one of S4C’s team of weather presenters, says: “Just like the weather here in Wales, the service that we offer to our viewers is changing and developing at speed. The app offers a very personal service unique to the users’ specific location. It is a pioneering step to have this tool which allows you to know the forecasts for every hour in your pocket.”
The channel will also incorporate changes to its weather website – s4c.co.uk/tywydd. This move to revamp the website is designed to simplify the way users access all of the information available to them.
An addition to the current online provision will be the IP address recognition system. The webpage will instantly recognise the location of the computer or digital device and load the correct weather to the nearest km for that location.
Viewers can also leave their comments or record of the weather by contacting tywydd@s4c.co.uk and the message may then appear on the website’s ‘Viewers’ Records’ page.
For those viewers who enjoy visiting the summer events in Wales, a new link on the website offers weather guidance on those particular events.
US- based global weather services provider Weather Central licenses S4C’s innovative weather service. Weather Central is currently the only provider of 1km forecasts in the world and S4C has been the first UK broadcaster to introduce it.
Mari and her fellow weather presenters will broadcast live bulletins from the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells throughout the week.
