You may notice a little more buzz on the streets of Aberystwyth and throughout Ceredigion over the coming weeks, as a major new S4C series is filmed in the area – and you could be part of the production.
Between now and May 2013, actors, producers, make-up, costume, sound and camera engineers from Fiction Factory production company will be spending most of their time in the Ceredigion town to film Mathias, a new detective thriller for S4C.
The series, starring Richard Harrington in the lead role of DCI Tom Mathias, will be broadcast on S4C in late 2013, and the series will also be shot in English at the same time to be broadcast on BBC Cymru Wales in 2014.
For the crews behind the camera, the hard work begins now. Most of the filming will take place in Aberystwyth, but the work starts this week in Borth and Ynyslas, before the action moves on to Devil's Bridge, Cwmsymlog, Blaenplwyf and Plas Gogerddan over the coming weeks.
Gwawr Martha Lloyd, S4C Drama Commissioner who comes from Aberystwyth, says, "Local people will notice the camera crews working in their area. With the town of Aberystwyth as the focus of the activity, the crews will also be working out in the surrounding Ceredigion countryside and towns to film four different stories which form the series. We really want this production to enable the viewer to get a feel for our wonderful area – the scenery and the people who make Ceredigion what it is.
"In this first period of filming, between 12 November and 21 December, the storyline is focused on the Devil's Bridge and Borth areas, where a grizzly discovery presents DCI Mathias with a puzzling murder investigation which brings some deeply buried secrets to the surface."
Ed Thomas, Executive producer and co-creator, says, "This production is an excellent opportunity to show off the locations and landscape which is familiar to everyone in Ceredigion but other people in Wales, Britain and the rest of the world won't have seen them before.
"A team of us will be in the area until the end of May. We will make Aberystwyth our home for six months and our office will be located on the seafront. We look forward to working in an area which has not been seen enough on screen."
Local people throughout Ceredigion have the opportunity to get in on the action and appear on the Mathias series as extras.
