Primary school pupils to star in glittering S4C/Daily Post concert

05 December 2012

Pupils from Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd will share a stage with the stars in the glittering S4C/Daily Post Carolau o Landudno concert.

The children’s choir will join a line-up that will include West End star Sophie Evans and Wyn Davies of Only Men Aloud in the concert to be held at Venue Cymru, Llandudno on Sunday, 16 December.

The concert is being organised by S4C and the Daily Post and Carolau o Landudno will be broadcast on S4C on Saturday, 22 December.

Hosted by broadcasters Branwen Gwyn and Hywel Gwynfryn, the concert is celebrating its 18th birthday this year.

Being held in Llandudno for the first time, proceeds will go to the Tŷ Gobaith/Hope House hospice charity.

The line-up also includes Owain John from Llansannan, of the Only Kids Aloud choir, folk group Calan, male voice choir Hogia'r Ddwylan, youth choir Ysgol Theatr Maldwyn, young violinist, Charlie Lovell-Jones and trio Canig.

The show will feature the primary school choir from the Denbighshire village of Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd after they won a national competition.

Headteacher Llinos Hughes said: “We are delighted and highly honoured. It’s a privilege to be chosen. We watch the concert every year on S4C and so taking part is a dream come true.”

Conducted by Beryl Lloyd Roberts, Ysgol Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd was the smallest school to compete in the contest. The choir – made up of 38 youngsters aged 11 – have just made a CD marking the school’s 150th anniversary.

Geraint Rowlands, S4C Head of Broadcast and Commissioner for Sport and Events, says, “The annual Christmas concert this year will be a stage for some of Wales’ biggest performing artists. Many of these acts have emerged and developed on S4C shows over the years and Llandudno’s Venue Cymru will be a fitting stage for their talents.

“It is wonderful to see fresh young talent on stage – it reflects our commitment to work with a new generation to develop performing talent for the future.

“It is a concert that will benefit the charity Tŷ Gobaith and will be among the highlights of S4C’s festive schedule.”

Claire Marshall from The Daily Post Events Department says, “The choir has lots of good experience in performing on stage and taking part in plenty of competitions. They have a good link with the charity Tŷ Gobaith, fantastic parental support and are celebrating 150 years.”
