Rhosllannerchrugog choir reach S4C competition final
25 March 2013
Male voice choir Côr Meibion Rhosllannerchrugog are the latest choir to win their place in the S4C Côr Cymru 2013 competition final.
In the programme on Saturday 23 March we were treated to the highlights of the male voice semi-final where Côr Meibion Rhosllannerchrugog competed against Bois y Waun Ddyfal, Bois Ceredigion and Eschoir – London Welsh Male Choir.
This was the second time for the choir to compete in the male voice category semi-final, but this year will be their first time in the Côr Cymru final, broadcast live on S4C in mid April.
"I'm lost for words. We've worked so hard as a team and this prize is for all the boys behind me," said an emotional Aled Phillips, the choir conductor, after they were announced winners of the category.
The choir was formed in 1891 and is based at the Stiwt theatre. There are 65 members varying in age from 18 to 80. There is a strong family tradition in the choir with several father and son teams singing alongside each other.
"I've chosen a programme which shows off the choir's sound, but also proves we can sing in different styles," explains Aled about the preparation work for the competition. It seems the hard work has paid off!
The Côr Cymru 2013 series continues next Saturday, 30 March 9.00 with highlights of the Female Choirs semi-final round. The mixed choirs close the semi-final rounds on the following Saturday, with the final live on S4C on Sunday 14 April, 6.30pm.
