S4C and BBC Cymru Wales secure coverage of Wales v Japan rugby tests
21 May 2013
Rugby Union fans can watch Wales face Japan during the June tour following a joint deal between BBC Cymru Wales and S4C.
Wales, under the guidance of coach Robin McBryde, play two Tests in Japan, and both will be broadcast live on television in Wales - the first on BBC One Wales and second on S4C. BBC Cymru Wales will also cover both matches live on radio and online.
Wales’s two-test tour of Japan will be the opportunity for players to push their claims for regular places in the Wales team, and will give some of our most promising young players a chance to establish themselves on the international scene.
The first Japan v Wales Test, in Osaka on Saturday, 8 June will be live on BBC One Wales, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and online. The match will be shown again in its entirety with a choice of Welsh or English commentary later that day on S4C.
A week later, the second Japan v Wales Test, in Tokyo, on Saturday, 15 June will be live on S4C with Welsh or English commentary available. There will also be live coverage on BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Radio Wales and the BBC website, with highlights on Scrum V on BBC Two Wales that evening.
Geoff Williams, Head of BBC Cymru Wales Sport, said "We are delighted to be able to bring coverage of these two Wales Tests to our viewers and listeners. It will be fascinating to see which Welsh players come to the fore in what should be two tough games, and well worth fans setting their early morning alarms for!"
S4C's Sports Commissioner Geraint Rowlands said: "This test series will provide an opportunity for some Welsh players to prove a point after missing out on Lions' selection, and the whole squad will be out to make an impression. Thanks to this joint deal between S4C and BBC Cymru Wales, we can watch every minute."
