S4C programmes have received 12 nominations in nine different categories for the Celtic Media Festival 2014 awards.

The Celtic Media Festival is being held in St Ives, Cornwall between 2 and 4 April this year, following on from the successful festival in Swansea last year.

S4C will be hoping to build on last year’s success when the Channel won four awards.

The channel has received two nominations in the Drama Series category, with the highly acclaimed detective series Y Gwyll/Hinterland (Fiction Factory production) and the second series of the drama Alys by Siwan Jones (Teledu Apollo, part of Boom Pictures Cymru) competing for the top award.

Two other drama productions have been shortlisted. The drama series Rownd a Rownd (Rondo Media), which recently celebrated its thousandth episode, competes in the Young People category while the powerful drama about land and inheritance Tir (Joio Cyf) is in the Feature Drama category.

Two productions by the same company, Cwmni Da, are shortlisted in the Arts category. One of them is the memorable film profile of the poet Gerallt Lloyd Owen, Gerallt, and the other is a poignant special edition of arts flagship Pethe, Pethe: Lleisiau Ysbyty Dimbach.

The documentary Defaid a Dringo (Cwmni Da) has already won a host of awards and the programme that follows the climber and shepherd Ioan Doyle competes in the Factual Single category.

Another series from the Cwmni Da stable makes it to the Factual Series shortlist. Llefydd Sanctaidd follows presenter and poet Ifor ap Glyn as he visits a number of sacred places on an unforgettable journey.

There is recognition once again of the quality of the Channel’s children and young people programming on the Cyw and Stwnsh services.

The shortlisted programmes in the Children category are the series #Fi (Boom Plant, part of Boom Pictures Cymru) and the programme Senghennydd 1913 (Tinopolis) which tells the story of one of the greatest tragedies in mining history.

Another project for young people has been nominated for the Kieran Hegarty Award for Innovation.

Dymafi.TV was a multi-platform project, led by Cwmni Da, which gave a unique look at the lives of young people, between 13 and 18, in Wales. The result was a film which included material created by young people on one specific day, and provides a varied account of one ordinary day in June 2013.

And the channel's animation programming once again comes to the fore with the English-language version of the children’s animation series, Igam Ogam (Calon/Telegael) in the race for a prize in the Animation category.

S4C's Director of Content, Dafydd Rhys says, “Last year was full of milestones across the S4C schedule and this is reflected in the wide range of nominations we have received for the Celtic Media 2014 awards.
