The groundbreaking crime series Y Gwyll / Hinterland is set to return to our screens. Broadcast partners S4C and BBC Cymru Wales are happy to announce that production will begin in September 2014 on a new five-part series.
Richard Harrington will return to the role of DCI Tom Mathias when the series returns at the end of 2014/early 2015. It reunites Richard with the production team comprising co-creators Ed Talfan and Ed Thomas, and Producer Gethin Scourfield.
Shooting will begin in Ceredigion in the autumn with the series again filmed back-to-back in Welsh and English. International Sales will be handled by distributors All3Media International.
Executive Producer Ed Thomas of Cardiff-based Fiction Factory said:
“We are thrilled that S4C and BBC Cymru Wales have decided to continue on this exciting journey with us. We are also excited about the imminent screening of the first series on BBC Four. The project celebrates Welsh talent in a myriad of ways and we are really looking forward to shooting a new series.”
S4C's Drama Commissioner, Gwawr Martha Lloyd said:
“From the beginning we knew that Y Gwyll/Hinterland was going to be a special project, and the series has certainly captured the imagination of viewers in Wales and beyond, and continues to do so as the series is broadcast on other Channels. It’s fantastic to announce that Y Gwyll/Hinterland will return with a second series as we continue our co-production partnership with All3Media International, Tinopolis and of course, the creators at Fiction Factory.
“With BBC Cymru Wales also on board as co-production partners for this second series, the audience can look forward to a new series of Y Gwyll/Hinterland – which means more nail-biting, edge-of-seat suspense, more intrigue in that stunning Ceredigion setting, and more clues about the troubled mind of DCI Mathias, the man around whom this gripping series is based.”
Adrian Davies, Head of English Language Programmes for BBC Cymru Wales said:
“We’re delighted to be able to work in partnership with S4C once more to commission a second series of Hinterland and are confident that it will build on the success of the first. Hinterland broke new ground for BBC One Wales audiences with its authentic mix of bilingual dialogue along with its strong storylines and breath-taking scenery. And the overwhelming audience response to the first series was extremely positive. I’m sure its forthcoming screening on BBC Four will result in an equally positive audience reaction – one that will add to the sense of anticipation for the next, exciting instalment.”
Louise Pedersen, at ALL3MEDIA International said:
“It is a testament to the Welsh creative team and commissioners that the series has created such a strong and positive impact on broadcasters around the world and we are certain that the new episodes will create further opportunities for the show.”
It has already been confirmed that BBC Four and DR from Denmark have bought the English version, andALL3MEDIA International is currently in discussion with other broadcasters outside the UK.
