Father and daughter team win S4C's 2014 songwriting competition

The winners of the Cân i Gymru 2014 songwriting competition – and the prize of £3,500 - is Barry Evans and his daughter Mirain, from Chwilog, with their song Galw Amdanat Ti (Calling for You).
The competition was held tonight, on Friday 28 February, at the Anglesey Pavilion, Gwalchmai – a new location for the event this year – and was broadcast live on S4C. Presenting the evening was the singer Elin Fflur and TV and Radio Cymru presenter Gethin Evans.
Barry, a former member of the folk group Y Moniars, started composing the song 20 years ago, but it was left unfinished until now – with the help of his daughter Mirain who performed the song on the competition night.
Gaynor Davies, S4C Entertainment Commissioner, congratulated all who took part: "Thank you to each of the finalists for putting on a fantastic show at the Anglesey Pavilion tonight. But, of course, there can only be one winner, and in the eyes of the voting public, and the panel of guest judges, Galw Amdanat Ti was the worthy winner. Congratulations to Barry and Mirain on their win."
The finalists this year featured six varied songs: Aderyn y Nos by Gruff Siôn Rees; Agor y Drws by Y Cledrau - Joseff Owen, Marged Gwenllian, Ifan Edwards and Alun Roberts; Ben Rhys by Gwilym Bowen Rhys and Siân Harris; Brown Euraidd by Kizzy Meriel Crawford; Dydd yn Dod by Ifan Davies and Gethin Griffiths; Galw Amdanat Ti by Barry and Mirain Evans.
After each were given their chance to perform, the task of choosing a winner was handed to the viewers via a phone vote which counted toward half of the final mark. The other half of the vote was decided by the panel of guest judges.
This year's judges were 2013 Cân i Gymru winners Osian Williams and Rhys Gwynfor; young singer-songwriter Alys Williams; singer Gwenda Owen, singer; and Neil 'Maffia' Williams of the Welsh rock group Maffia Mr Huws.
