S4C go bananas in Bala

07 May 2014

S4C went bananas in Bala recently as they looked forward to broadcasting from the Meirionnydd 2014 Urdd Eisteddfod on 26 to 31 April.

There was a buzz about town as hundreds of local pupils and residents joined familiar S4C faces to star in a music video to promote the Channel's coverage from the youth festival this year.

S4C has created a music video for a new version of the song 'Mynd i'r Bala Mewn Cwch Banana' (Going to Bala in a Banana Boat) originally released by Welsh group Bara Menyn in the 1960s.

In the mix there were youngsters from Aelwyd Penllyn and pupils from Ysgol y Berwyn, Ysgol Beuno Sant, Ysgol Ffridd y Llyn, Ysgol Bro Tegid, Ysgol Bro Tryweryn and Ysgol O.M Edwards.

In the video they are seen sailing on King Arthur's ship with pirate Ben Dant, climbing ropes at Glan Llyn, and taking the train from Llanwchllyn to Bala.

And on Wednesday 30 April, traffic was brought to a standstill on Heol Tegid for a banana procession involving around 300 locals.

During the visit, S4C's Cyw made a new friend when she met local celebrity Tegi – the Bala Lake monster!

Aled Wyn Phillips, S4C Head of On-screen Promotions, says, "This is a lively fun filled video which is sure to bring a smile to our faces as we look forward to the coverage from the Meirionnydd Urdd Eisteddfod in Bala.

"We'd like to thank the children, teachers and local residents who helped us and took starring roles in the video. I hope they enjoyed going bananas in Bala as much as we did!"

The video will be broadcast from 12 May onwards, leading up to the Meirionnydd 2014 Urdd Eisteddfod when you'll be able to follow the events on S4C from dawn until dusk.

Guiding us through events will be Anni Llyn, Lois Cernyw, Trystan Ellis Morris, Nia Roberts, Heledd Cynwal and Iwan Griffiths.
