S4C programmes and productions have been nominated for 39 awards at the BAFTA Cymru nominations list 2014.
Leading the pack is Y Gwyll/Hinterland with nine nominations - the highest number on the list this year. One of S4C’s biggest series last year, the detective drama has captured the imagination of viewers in Wales, Britain and beyond, after the first broadcast on S4C in the autumn of 2013.
A production by Fiction Factory in association with S4C, Tinopolis, S4C Co-Production Fund and All3Media International Ltd, the series has received international acclaim after being sold worldwide and now it has been shortlisted for the best Television Drama BAFTA Cymru 2014 award, alongside other major series' Stella (Sky) and Sherlock (BBC).
Richard Harrington has been nominated for the Best Actor award in the main role of DCI Tom Mathias, and there's a Best Actress nomination for Mali Harries in the role of DI Marred Rhys.
Director Marc Evans has been nominated for his work on the first story in the four-part series and Jeff Murphy is nominated as Best Writer for the fourth story in the series. There is also nominations for Photography and Lighting (Richard Stoddart); Sound (Production Team); and Costume Design (Ffion Elinor).
Actors in S4C dramas have claimed all three nominations for Best Actress: Rhian Blythe and Siw Hughes for their parts in Gwaith/Cartref (Fiction Factory) complete the trinity of nominations along with Mali Harries.
Of the three nominations for Best Actor, two are from S4C dramas as Matthew Gravelle also received a nomination for the role of Pat in 35 Diwrnod.
Altogether 35 Diwrnod (TV Apollo) has received five nominations including Best Writers for Siwan Jones and Wil Roberts and Director Fiction for Gareth Bryn. There are nominations too for Editing, Dafydd Hunt, and a nomination for Photography and Lighting, Huw Talfryn Walters.
Other notable S4C dramas have also been nominated, including Feature / Television Film for Y Syrcas (Ffati Ffilms) along with a nomination for Thomas Pearce for Production Design. Heulwen Evans has been nominated for the Make-Up and Hair in Reit Tu ôl i Ti (Tarian); and short drama Fi a Miss World in the Short Form and Animation category (It's My Shout).
Beyond the fiction, S4C documentaries and current affairs dominate the list. S4C programmes have claimed all the nominations in the Director Factual and Single Documentary category.
Among them are two heart-felt documentaries profiling two iconic and influential Welsh figures, with nominations recognising the work of the directors of Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies, Dylan Wyn Richards (Telesgop) and Merêd, Guto Williams (Cwmni Da). Gwennan Mair has also been nominated in the Factual Director category for her work on Taith Fawr y Dyn Bach (Cwmni Da).
As well as a nomination in the Factual Series category, Taith Fawr y Dyn Bach presenter James Lusted has also been nominated for a Breakthrough Award, together with Elin Jones for her work on the single documentary Cofio Senghennydd (Tinopolis) which is also nominated for the special Gwyn Alf Williams Award.
The three nominations in the Single Document category are: Darwin, y Cymru a'r Cynllwyn (Teledu Telesgop); O'r Galon - Yr Hardys: Un Dydd ar y Tro (Rondo Media); Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies. The documentary Merêd is included in the Editing category (Sion Aron), along with 35 Diwrnod (David Hunt) and Y Gwyll (Mali Evans).
And S4C broadcasts have also taken all three Current Affair nominations. There is praise for Geraint Evans and the rest of the ITV Wales current affairs team for two emotional editions of Y Byd ar Bedwar: one about the missing Machynlleth schoolgirl April Jones and another on the Typhoon which devastated Taiwan. The BBC Cymru Wales current affairs team is also nominated for the series Taro Naw.
Music and Entertainment is another category, with a nomination for Dim Byd (Cwmni Da); in the Children's Programme category, there are two nominations: #Fi (Boom Pictures Production) and Nidini (Griffilms). The BBC Cymru Wales sports coverage team have also received two nominations in the Sport Programme and Live Outside Broadcast category for Y Clwb Rygbi and the single programme Cymru: Pencampwyr y Chwe Gwlad 2013.
Also among the list of nominations are two BAFTA Cymru awards for Gruff Rhys' film, American Interior. The film will have its first TV broadcast on S4C on Sunday 14 September, when the Welsh version I Grombil Cyfandir Pell: American Interior is shown for the first time.
Ian Jones, Chief Executive of S4C, "The past year was a busy time for S4C drama with several excellent productions. Without a doubt, Y Gwyll was the biggest of the S4C dramas. Gripping, dramatic and different to anything else shown on the channel in recent years, it was well received by our viewers. It's also raised the profile of S4C and the Welsh language nationally and internationally.
"35 Diwrnod was also an original series with a gripping storyline which kept us at the edge of our seats. With another series of 35 Diwrnod and more of Y Gwyll currently being developed, the nominations are a tribute to the work of the writers, actor and the two production teams at Teledu Apollo and Fiction Factory.
"What is also evident, when looking at the list this year, is the number of S4C factual documentaries and current affairs programmes nominated. I am pleased to see so many nominations for the channel again this year.
