New Year tour to encourage Welsh learners to keep at it
13 February 2015
There's no better time to take on a new challenge than at the start of a new year. And during January and February, S4C presenter and Welsh language tutor Nia Parry has been on a tour to meet groups of people across Wales who have taken up speaking Welsh as their New Year's Resolution.
Cwmbran and Cowbridge are the next locations on her tour, on Saturday 14 February, as she shares her love for the language with learners at the two Welsh for Adults Centres. She will answer their questions, share advice and encourage them to master the language with the help of S4C's Dal Ati service.
"This tour has really raised my spirits," says Nia, who presents S4C's Dal Ati programmes for learners. "In Mold, I met a group of 80 people who had made a resolution to learn Welsh this year on a New Year's course. At this time of year, people tend to think about what they would like to achieve – and what better than to learn a new language, and better still if that language is Welsh!"
On her journey, Nia has already visited Welsh for Adults centres in Mold, Bangor, and Llanelli, and is also due to meet learners in Pontypridd as part of the Dal Ati tour.
"The sessions are very jolly, and I've been inspired by the learners who give their time and energy in to learning a new language, or to reclaim a language that they have lost. It's interesting to speak to them, and discuss with them about the process of learning a language," adds Nia.
S4C's Dal Ati programmes are tailored for intermediate and higher level learners, and are broadcast every Sunday morning between 10.30 and 12.30. Also, the Dal Ati website and app offer additional support such as vocabulary and bonus learning material.
And now, using the app, intermediate and higher level Welsh learners will be able to watch popular Sunday evening series Gwaith/Cartref, and understand it a bit better.
While watching the programme they will receive alerts with vocabulary in Welsh and English on their tablet or smartphone which will appear a couple of seconds before it’s heard on screen. Learners will be able to expand their Welsh skills, and gain confidence while watching Gwaith/Cartref on Sundays at 9:00 - or the repeat on Tuesday nights at 10.30.
