Following weeks of tough competition, Heol y March choir was crowned Côr Cymru 2015 live on S4C after a memorable evening at Aberystwyth Arts Centre tonight (Sunday, 19 April).
The choir from Cowbridge took the prestigious Côr Cymru 2015 title awarded by the adjudicators. It was a memorable weekend for their conductor Eleri Roberts, as a primary school choir, Ysgol Iolo Morganwg, under her conductorship, won the inaugural primary school choir competition on Saturday evening.
It was also an unforgettable evening for Janet Jones, conductor of Parti Llwchwr, as she won the Best Conductor award, a prize sponsored by Gwesty Llety Parc Hotel, while her choir won the home viewers’ choice award in the televote.
The winner of the mixed category, Cywair of Newcastle Emlyn, Parti Llwchwr women's choir from Loughor, youth choir category winner Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion, Côr Heol y March, children's choir from Cowbridge and the winner of the male voice choir category, Bechgyn Bro Taf from Cardiff battled it out in the final.
The primary school choirs in the Côr Cymru Cynradd final were Llangennech Junior Choir, Ysgol Gymraeg Teilo Sant Choir (Llandeilo), Côr Ysgol y Wern (Llanishen, Cardiff) and Ysgol Iolo Morganwg Choir.
The evening was presented by broadcasters Morgqn Jones and Heledd Cynwal.
Côr Cymru presenter Heledd Cynwal says, "It's a wonderful experience to host this competition. This is an exciting, multi-layered competition. Unlike the National Eisteddfod, the international judges are blind to the initial auditions and every choir begins with a clean slate – that's what makes Côr Cymru unique. Seeing the choirs mixing backstage is very rewarding, and it's great that they receive immediate feedback from the judges."
The competition has been held every two years since 2003, with Newcastle Emlyn's Côr y Wiber taking home the title in 2013.
