S4C Chairman Huw Jones has welcomed the appointment of John Whittingdale to the role of Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport:

"I very much welcome the opportunity to work with John Whittingdale in his new role as Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport. At S4C, we are familiar with the new Secretary of State from his time as Chair of the Commons Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport.

"The committee’s recent report, just prior to the election, showed a keen understanding of some of the important issues for the future of S4C, the need for sufficient funding, and continued independence as part of a thriving and plural Welsh media sector. His long-standing knowledge of the media sector puts him in a strong position from the outset.

"I would also like to place on record my thanks to the outgoing Secretary of State, Sajid Javid, for the way in which he has engaged constructively with S4C during his time in office. I wish him the very best in his new post."
