Madron wins BAFTA Cymru games award

19 June 2015

An S4C multiplatform project for young people has won Commendation at the BAFTA Cymru Awards 2015 for Games & Interactive Experience.

Madron is an original project produced in partnership between the S4C Digital Fund, Cube and Glasshead. The Artistic Achievement Commendation was awarded to Madron in the BAFTA Cymru Awards for Games & Interactive Experience ceremony held on Friday 19 June.

Madron is an interactive comic strip and game available through a series of apps. The story began with a single episode shown on S4C's Stwnsh service in May 2014, and then continued in four apps which were available for download on tablet or smartphone.

The Madron story follows the adventures of Seren and Ishmael in a world where a virulent virus has turned people in to terrifying zombies. In addition to the animated story, the players must complete a number of digital games within the apps to discover what happens next.

Huw Marshall, S4C Digital Manager says, "Madron is a pioneering multi-platform Welsh language project that appeals to a younger audience.

"To receive this accolade for an original Welsh project shows it is possible to create new content specifically for the audience here in Wales, which is one of the objectives of the S4C Digital Fund. The award today has also given the project a boost as it aims to appeal to the international market and take original content from Wales out to the rest of the world."

Two further projects, which have received support S4C, have also come out on top in the awards. Twt (Toot's Harbour) won a Sound and Music Commendation. Twt is a Thud Media animation which is available both as a TV series and as online content on S4C's Cyw service for small children. Boj is another animated series on Cyw, and the game 'Boj Digs' (Thud Media) won a Gameplay Design Commendation.

The BAFTA Cymru Awards for Games & Interactive Experience was held at Cardiff City Hall on Friday 19 June. The ceremony is part of the Wales Games Development Show, and they recognise, honour and reward individuals for outstanding creative achievement in their field.
