Follow the dream of writing a hit single!

17 November 2016

Many of us have dreamed about writing a hit single and reaching the top of the charts. A multiplatinum anthem that will be heard for years to come.

That dream is within everyone's reach - so why not take the first step by competing in S4C's annual song writing competition Cân i Gymru 2017 (A Song for Wales)?

Who knows, perhaps this year's winning song is forming in your mind right now. Or what about that song you composed all those years ago which has never seen the light of day?

There's a £5,000 prize up for grabs for the winning song, with a second prize of £2,000, and £1,000 for third place. What other reason do you need to submit your masterpiece for the Cân i Gymru competition which opens today, Thursday 17 November?

And there's plenty of time to perfect your entry, with the closing date at 5.00pm on Friday, 6 January 2017.

The competition will be held as part of S4C's St David's Day celebrations on Saturday, 4 March 2017, and will be presented by Trystan Ellis-Morris, and Elin Fflur, who performed the winning entry in the 2002 competition.

Elin Fflur said, "What's brilliant about Cân i Gymru is that it gives people the encouragement to go out and compose new music. It's so important we continue to produce songs in the Welsh language, and music is a brilliant way for the language to reach new audiences. Cân i Gymru is a platform for new talent – from the composing to the performing – and it's an opportunity for some people to experience professional music recording for the first time. I'll never forget my first Cân i Gymru experience!"

S4C's Entertainment Content Commissioner, Elen Rhys, said, "Cân i Gymru is a competition that brings people together. Whether it's family and friends making the effort to watch together, or the thousands of judges who share their witty opinions on Twitter. At the heart of it all is the music – we'll be producing eight new Welsh language songs. But Cân i Gymru wouldn't be the same without the audience, since it's the viewers who ultimately decide the winner."
