Huw Jones, Chair of the S4C Authority has paid tribute to a former S4C Authority member.
Reverend Dr. Alwyn Roberts was on the BBC Board of Governors and was Chairman of the Broadcasting Council in Wales before representing the BBC on the first Board of the S4C Authority.
Huw Jones said of the academic and reverend:
“Alwyn Roberts was an influential figure in the world of broadcasting - in Wales and in the United Kingdom. As a BBC representative on the first Board of the S4C Authority, he was crucial in ensuring constructive collaboration and an active contribution from the Corporation to the success of the channel in its early days.
“As one of the BBC's Governors, he made a stance that was widely respected by broadcasters as he opposed the decision of the board to dismiss Alasdair Milne, the Director General, under political pressure.
“He was a critical friend of S4C over the years, especially when chairing the Compliance Panel in the 90's. He ensured appropriate arrangements and a deep understanding of the topics in question in enabling the channel to meet regulatory requirements while retaining its independence and editorial courage.
