‘Silver fox’ former Wales footballer excited about reporter challenge on S4C’s Heno

One of Wales' football heroes is turning his hand to a new position – as a correspondent on S4C's nightly magazine show, Heno.

Owain Tudur Jones has netted the role as Heno's third North Wales-based correspondent, joining two other popular presenters, Elin Fflur and Gerallt Pennant.

The former midfielder's kick off on the Heno show will be on Monday 8 April.

The 34-year-old from Bangor, who won seven caps for Wales and is a pundit on S4C's Sgorio and BBC Radio Cymru, is looking forward hugely to the new challenge.

The husband and father of two, Owain Tudur Jones said: "I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be a correspondent on Heno. The challenge will be very different from being a football analyser and pundit, and that's why the job attracted me.

"I'll now get the chance to share stories and interview people who are so important to S4C viewers. There's a risk for a presenter or a sports pundit to be typecast in the same way as actors, but, presenting on Heno will definitely add another string to my bow," said Owain, adding that he'll still carry on as a sports pundit and analyser.

Owain is familiar with success on and off the playing field as he's had the honour of playing for Swansea City between 2005 and 2009 helping the side gain promotion from League One, and helped the children's programme, Cic, win a BAFTA Cymru award last year as one of the programme's two presenters.

"There are many scary things that will come hand in hand with my new role that will surely make my hair go grey even quicker! But many silver foxes have gained success on television!" said Owain, who admires the famous grey-haired presenter, Phillip Schofield, on ITV's This Morning.

The series' editor and presenter, Angharad Mair, from production company Tinopolis believes that Owain is a great signing for the magazine series, that broadcasts mainly from Llanelli but also from Caernarfon Monday-Friday at 7.00pm on S4C.

Angharad Mair said, "We're over the moon to be expanding our coverage from North Wales. This will ensure that all events from the furthest point in Llŷn Peninsula all the way to the Welsh border will get the attention it deserves on Heno and Prynhawn Da. Elin, Gerallt, and Owain are looking forward to gathering stories from the people of North Wales, and anyone is welcome to pop into the office in Galeri, Caernarfon at any time."

FAST FACTS ABOUT OWAIN

Owain is one of the coaches of Wales 'C' – the national semi-professional team – who recently played against the old enemy, England. He enjoys coaching – but says it's more 'intense' and involves more work than playing.

His grandfather Geraint Vaughan Jones is a well-known Welsh author and his family roots are in Blaenau Ffestiniog and Trawsfynydd.

During his playing career, Owain played in the Welsh Premier League and the Scottish Premier League, as well as the English pyramid. He represented a total of 10 clubs; Porthmadog, Bangor City, Swansea City, Swindon Town (on loan), Norwich City, Yeovil Town (on loan), Brentford (on loan), Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Hibernian and Falkirk.

He won three caps for the Wales-Under-21 team and seven for Wales.

He was forced to retire from football at an early age due to a serious knee injury.

He admires Gary Lineker and Dylan Ebenezer as sports presenters, and along with Philip Schofield, he also is a big fan of TV presenters Ifan Jones Evans and Trystan Ellis-Morris.
