Côr-ona and Rhys Meirion unite to raise a smile

22 March 2020

S4C has commissioned a new programme inspired by a Facebook page called Côr-ona.

The Côr-ona Facebook public group led by Catrin Angharad Jones has attracted almost 17,000, with hundreds of individuals contributing videos and proving that it was possible to socialise remotely all through the medium of Welsh.

This program, produced by Cwmni Da, will build on the Côr-ona campaign where Rhys Meirion will conduct a social experiment by bringing people from far and near to enjoy the thrill of singing together on a laptop in the kitchen, iPad in the shed or PC in the attic.

We see Rhys connect over the phone, through the window of the house and the computer screen, we hear the stories of the nurse who continues to work hard against the virus; the scattered family; the internet music teacher and the vulnerable individuals trying to cope with the process of self-isolation.

Rhys Meirion said: "What Catrin has achieved on the Côr-ona Facebook page is a phenomenon!

"It proves that we Welsh people see our culture as a lifeline, and shows that singing is something that everyone can be a part of, from the very youngest children to all older people in our society. It's great that technology can now help us socialise."

Elen Rhys, Entertainment Commissioner, said: "S4C has an important role to play in this crisis, and the fact that we can offer top quality entertainment and make people smile at difficult times is vital.

"We are also pleased to be able to respond to Catrin's positive idea and bring everyone together with this special programme. S4C is here for you"

This will be a multimedia project with fly-on-the-wall clips and music lessons by Rhys being shared on digital platforms, and an opportunity for everyone to contribute from all over Wales.
