The Royal Welsh Show must go on! S4C plans week of special programmes

15 July 2020

Although the Royal Welsh Show 2020 has been cancelled, S4C viewers will not miss out thanks to a week full of special programmes to celebrate the most important event in Wales's agricultural calendar.

As well as having the chance to re-live some of the most exciting highlights of recent competitions in the show, viewers can vote for their favourite animals online or even show off some hidden talents.

The week of programmes begins on Sunday, 19 July at 8.00pm with Ymlaen â'r Sioe (On with the Show) with Ifan Jones Evans and Mari Lovgreen who look ahead to a week of entertainment from the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd.

Nia Roberts will present coverage during the day from 4.00pm to 6.00pm, Monday to Thursday, 20-23 July in Pencampwyr y Sioe (Show Champions). She will look back at the main championships every day and offer viewers a chance to choose the Champion of Champions from among the highlights of five recent memorable years of the show.

Every day there will be an opportunity for viewers to choose the Champion of Champions from five recent years. There will also be a daily look at other events at the Show with Aeron Pughe, Alun Elidyr and Meinir Howells who will also share their favourite memories of the Show.

Every night there will be a series of programmes live from Llanelwedd with Ifan Jones Evans and Mari Lovgreen – Ymlaen â'r Sioe. This programme will bring a flavour of the week so many people will be missing this year.

In this family show, Ifan and Mari will be discussing all sorts of things to do with the Show – the characters, the best stock, produce and memorable stories from over the years.

As well as announcing the winners of the daily competitions - Bridwyr y Buarth (Farmyard Breeders) and Pencampwyr y Sioe (Show Champions), Mari will be facing daily challenges such as shearing, wood cutting and showing.

There will be some familiar faces joining the two to discuss all sorts of Show memories as well as some brand-new items including a cookery slot with Chris 'Flamebaster' Roberts and young talent from the farming world.

There will be four programmes daily from 8.00-9.00pm, Monday to Thursday, July 20-23.

Ifan said: "The Royal Welsh Show has been one of the highlights of the year for me ever since I was a little boy and I would go with my parents and now I take my family there. It means so much to the countryside community in Wales and there is going to be a huge gap this year."

"But I'm looking forward to working with Mari again – we've been texting each other back and fore. We hope that Ymlaen â'r Sioe will fill a gap and bring something to the lives of the people who are missing the show."

"We will be looking back at past winners, but we will also be celebrating the agricultural world as it is now – seeing the stock and celebrating what is important. We want to create a feeling of belonging and a homely feel – all the things that so many people love about the Show."

Nia Roberts will take the reins once again at 9.00pm every night from Monday – Thursday with a Champions of Show programme (Pencampwyr y Sioe).

Y Sioe 2020 is sponsored by Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Glynllifon.
