Green award nomination for Port Talbot based drama
26 August 2020
S4C's Welsh language drama Bang has been nominated for the Green award at the Edinburgh TV Awards.
The Green award, which is a new award for 2020, will go to the producer, channel, platform or organisation that has championed sustainability in the industry.
Bang, which is a Joio production, was filmed and produced in the industrial town of Port Talbot. The second series aired on S4C in Spring 2020, following the success of the first series, which was first broadcast on S4C in 2017.
Amanda Rees, S4C's Director of Content, said:
"We are extremely proud that Bang has been nominated for this award. The Green Award is a welcome recognition as we aim to work more sustainably with producers in the future. We all have a duty to do our bit and reduce our carbon footprint, and this award acknowledges the industry's efforts."
Production company Joio took several steps to try and work more sustainably during the production. Joio chose an empty building in Port Talbot as a production location, close to the town's train and bus station, to facilitate the use of public transport to get to the set.
The building was used as the base for the production, transforming the corridors and rooms into a filming set. Most of the production's costumes were either bought second-hand or hired, and the materials used to build the set were recycled at the end of the production.
Amongst this and many other endeavours, Joio was able to maintain a low carbon footprint during the production of series 2. Bang was also awarded an Albert Sustainable Production certification earlier this year, which is an authority that promotes the television and film industry to operate in a more environmentally sustainable way.
Roger Williams, author and producer of Bang:
"We are very proud of this nomination. The team sought to work in a sustainable and responsible way from the start. When shooting the series, we set a precedent for reducing our carbon footprint. It's great that our efforts are being recognised by a prestigious awards ceremony such as Edinburgh TV Awards."
The announcement came from the Edinburgh TV Festival on Tuesday, 25 August, as they announced the awards shortlists. The Edinburgh TV Awards ceremony will take place later this year.
