‘Bach o Hwne’ is the winner of Cân i Gymru 2021

The song 'Bach o Hwne' by Morgan Elwy Williams has won Can i Gymru 2021.

'Bach o Hwne' by Morgan Elwy Williams was chosen as the winner by a live public vote by viewers of Cân i Gymru 2021 on S4C tonight (March 5) from the Donald Gordon Theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

Morgan is 25 and originally from Tan y Fron near Llansannan but has been living in North London since 2019. After leaving school, he graduated in Physics from Manchester University and is now a part-time Physics teacher in a school in London. Last year he was fortunate to have the time in the last lockdown to record his new album, which he hopes will be out in April.

Morgan said:

"This means the world to me, and thanks to everyone who supported. And thanks to the band, too – it's amazing, especially after the year that's just been."

The 2021 competition was launched back in November 2020 with the closing date on January 3.

A panel of four judges chose the eight songs that appeared in the final round of Cân i Gymru. This year, the panel who decided on the eight final songs were Osian Williams from the band Candelas who won the competition in 2013 with the song Mynd i Gorwen Hefo Alys; Angharad Jenkins from the folk band Calan; singer, actor and presenter Tara Bethan and singer-songwriter Huw Chiswell, who composed the competition's winning song in 1984 with the classic, Y Cwm.

But tonight, the public had the last word by voting for their favourite song during the live show.

Morgan Elwy Williams wins the Cân i Gymru 2021 trophy and the cash prize of £5,000.

Fel Hyn Mae Byw by Huw Ynyr took second place and wins a cash prize of £2,000 and Siarad yn fy Nghwsg by Melda Lois Griffith came third with a prize of £1,000.

Siôn Llwyd from Avanti Media, who produce the programme on behalf of S4C said the iconic Cân i Gymru competition had once again highlighted how much musical talent exists in Wales.

"Congratulations to Morgan and to each and every one of the performers and composers who took part in Cân i Gymru this year – it has been an amazing night, especially after a hard year. The standard of the artists taking part bodes well for the future of Cân i Gymru and the future of Welsh music" said Siôn.
