4 March 2022

The song 'Mae yna Le' by Rhydian Meilir and performed by Ryland Teifi is the winner of Can i Gymru 2022.

'Mae yna Le' by Rhydian Meilir was selected as the winner by a live public vote by viewers of Cân i Gymru 2022 programme on S4C tonight (March 4) from Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Rhydian, from Cemaes near Machynlleth, is a familiar face for Cân i Gymru.

He reached the shortlist in 2012 with Cynnal y Fflam, in 2019 with Gewn ni Weld Sut Eith Hi and composed two out of the eight songs shortlisted in 2020, Pan Fyddai'n 80 Oed and Tir a'r Môr.

Ryland Teifi performed the song, which is a tribute to nature and the beauty of the world.

Rhydian said:

"It's a very emotional feeling to win, I didn't have any expectations at all, but I really wanted another go.

"You can't get rid of me! I enjoyed all the songs - the evening was like a concert. I'm really proud of Ryland, and glad he put his own stamp on the song. "

This years competition was launched back in November 2021

A panel of four judges selected the eight songs that reached the final of Cân i Gymru 2022. This year, the panel was Dafydd Iwan, Betsan Haf Evans, Lily Beau and Elidyr Glyn.

But tonight, the public got the final say by voting for their favourite song during the live programme.

Rhydian Meilir wins the 2022 Can i Gymru trophy and the £5,000 prize.

The song 'Cana dy Gân' was the runner-up with a prize of £ 2,000 and the song 'Rhyfedd o Fyd' in third place with a prize of £1,000.

Siôn Llwyd of Avanti Media, who produces the programme on S4C's behalf, said that the iconic Cân i Gymru competition has again highlighted the musical talent that exists in Wales.

"Congratulations to Rhydian and Ryland and to all the performers and composers who have participated in this year's Cân i Gymru - it has been an incredible evening.

"The quality of the artists tonight bodes well for the future of Cân i Gymru and the future of Welsh music, "said Siôn.
