The series follows Ani's story, a single successful lawyer who has just turned forty and decides to use a sperm bank to impregnate.
But motherhood is not what she expected it to be.
Anfamol is a TV adaptation of Rhiannon Boyle's stage play that will be shown on S4C from 6 September, with the full Box Set released on the same date.
Rhiannon Boyle said:
"It's dark but hilarious, and Ani's pieces to camera are guaranteed to have people cringing and laughing at the same time."
Bethan Ellis Owen, who plays the lead role in the drama, said the series "gives mums the freedom to know that it's okay to be angry with their children or not to like them sometimes, and that doesn't mean they don't love them".
"S4C has never shown a drama so full of sex and sexy Argentinian South American men who speak Welsh".
Bethan played the same role - Ani - in the stage play which toured with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in late 2021.
This time, the characters who were discussed as part of Ani's original stage monologue become full characters in the series.
Among the cast is Bethan's father, Wynford Ellis Owen playing Ani's father in the drama.
The inspiration for the play came from author Rhiannon Boyle's personal experiences of becoming a parent:
"I had two girls within 21 months and that hit me hard.
"On the outside I was coping brilliantly but inside I was struggling with a loss of identity, exhaustion, anxiety, depression, feeling invisible and bored.
"I wanted to talk about those feelings so that other mums who feel the same way can relate and feel like they're not alone.
"This is a play that talks about things people are afraid of, or too embarrassed to talk about.
"It's a witty, blunt comedy that's full of humour but has a story full of love and hope at the heart of the narrative."
Anfamol represents Wales' strong women not only on screen but also behind the scenes.
In an industry where women are underrepresented on set, the aim was to ensure that as many women as possible were part of the production team.
Bethan became mum to Jesi, her third child, back in October last year just before filming on the series began, and the shooting schedule took her needs as a new mum into consideration.
"With the history of the Anfamol stage show and the subjects that are discussed, it felt easier to go back to work somehow" says Bethan.
"Since Jesi was allowed to come with me, it was somehow manageable – I don't think that I could have done any other work.
"This was so different and unique – I never would have said no to it... I would've done it the day after birth if I had to!
"There were so many women working on the programme on the set I think everyone understood each other and came from the same place and shared experiences. I think that made the production an unique experience."
Producer Branwen Williams adds:
"This is BBC STUDIOS' first production for S4C and the company is privileged to produce Welsh language programmes for Wales.
"Although Anfamol is a story about a woman becoming a mother, and all the challenges that come with that – there is so much more to this drama that the audience can relate to, regardless of gender or personal experience.
"This is a story of complicated relationships between family, friends, co-workers and strangers we all encounter on a daily basis.
"It's a story for fathers, mothers, for those who want children, for those who can't have children, or don't want children at all.
"These five episodes lead us on a sincere and funny journey to challenge the conventional notion of what a family is."
