Call out for Hansh Documentary Film Ideas

S4C is looking for new ideas for documentary films to publish on Hansh. We want stories that will inspire, amaze, raise smiles, adventurous films that use a completely contemporary documentary format.

We are eager to get ideas about stories of exceptional young people who can take viewers into another world with a narrative that develops in the moment; documentaries with plenty of humour that question and tease Welsh identities; documentaries that try to give a positive picture of the wide variety of experiences of Welsh speakers (or speakers of other languages in Wales). We are very interested in stories that are led by women and people from underrepresented backgrounds.

We are looking for films:

  • 1x30,
  • On a variety of topics, but you must clearly demonstrate that they are relevant and reflect the contemporary aspirations and interests of viewers 16-34
  • Who can make creative and innovative use of the money available using suitable camera and graphic techniques
  • All pitches will need to be in the form of a 'deck slide' including:

  • A strong and clear title
  • One line strapline
  • A clear explanation of why Hansh, why now, who it appeals to and why it is relevant to that audience?
  • What is the Big Question the documentary tries to answer.
  • A story outline giving the background of the main character(s), what we will follow with them during the film, and the kind of emotional story evolution we can expect to see.
  • A definite idea of the tone and style of the documentary - who are your influences? Does another documentary style inspire you? Please provide examples and images / video / moodboard.
  • A little information about the key creative team and your document experience / links to previous work.
  • Budget

Depending on the content, but we are looking at commission the content at a tariff of up to £50,000.00 per project.

    How to submit an idea?

If you are interested, please send your idea to syniad@s4c.cymru by 12:00 Tuesday, 20th August, 2024. You can submit more than one idea, but you will need to send them separately. We will confirm and send the receipt of the idea by email.

The S4C production website http://www.s4c.cymru/cy/cynhyrchu/ offers useful information including technical, contractual and conveying information if you have a question about the production processes.

It is the intention of Guto Rhun, Commissioner for Young Audiences to select a shortlist in mid-September 2024 - the right is reserved to adjust the timetable and our intention will be notified by email. If you are successful the idea will need to be put on the S4C - Cloud commissioning system. This should not be done before receiving the invitation.

We look forward to receiving your proposals.

The right is reserved not to commission any of the proposals received.
